Mortar or dry-stack? It changes more than you’d think
Most DIY sauna walls get built with heat-safe mortar or construction adhesive, brick directly on the wall. If you’re doing a small accent panel, mortar is fine – there’s less surface area trapping moisture and less heat cycling overall. If you’re covering an entire sauna wall that’s going to see regular use for a decade, it’s worth at least pricing out a dry-stack system before you commit to glue.
The moisture problem nobody mentions until it’s too late
Here’s the thing that catches a lot of first-time buyers off guard: Himalayan salt and steam saunas don’t mix. A traditional Finnish sauna where you ladle water onto hot rocks will, sooner or later, splash or steam onto a nearby salt wall, and that moisture doesn’t evaporate cleanly – it dissolves the salt’s surface, slowly turning a crisp brick edge into something soft and pitted. Infrared saunas don’t have this problem, since there’s no steam cycle, which is part of why so many salt-wall installations these days are infrared builds specifically.
If you’ve already got a traditional steam sauna and you still want the look, keep the salt wall on a side or back wall away from where water gets ladled, and crack the door or vent after every session so the room can actually dry out. The one thing that still matters indoors is ordinary household humidity. Food-grade and wall-grade aren’t automatically the same thing, even when the label size matches. A pallet of 8″x4″x2″ bricks for even a modest sauna wall runs into the hundreds of pounds, and freight from a US or overseas supplier adds up fast. A Canadian or cross-border supplier can change the real cost of a project more than the per-brick price does.
